# How to read a suit fitting — top to bottom

> A suit that fits is almost invisible — you stop thinking about it, which is the point. Before you take one to a tailor, it helps to know which areas to focus on first and which fixes are straightforward versus genuinely difficult.

## In short

- Shoulders and collar should fit off the rack — the rest is adjustable
- Tug test: 2–3 cm of give at the button is ideal
- About 1 cm of shirt cuff should show at the sleeve
- Match trouser length and leg width when shortening significantly
- Bring the shirt and shoes you will actually wear with the suit

## Where a suit is made or lost

A suit lives and dies at the shoulders and collar. Those are the hard, costly fixes, so it pays to get them roughly right off the rack — almost everything else can be adjusted.

## What to check, top to bottom

Start with shoulders and collar — those are the hard fixes. Everything below them gets progressively easier.

1. **Check the shoulders first — no magic here** — The shoulder seam should end where your shoulder bone ends; if the jacket is clearly too tight or too wide here, changes are difficult and often expensive.
2. **Collar close to the neck** — The jacket collar should sit against the neck without standing off or wrinkling; collar corrections are among the most demanding alterations.
3. **Back and chest: smooth, with a little ease** — The back should sit mostly smooth, with only a small fold behind the arms; horizontal pulling or strong creases mean the jacket is too tight.
4. **Jacket length and shirt cuff** — From the front the jacket should roughly cover your seat, and about a centimetre of shirt cuff should show at the sleeve.
5. **Check the waist with a tug test** — Do the jacket up and give the front button a gentle tug; about 2–3 cm of give is usually ideal — much more and it's too loose, less and it's too tight.
6. **Waistband: holds without a belt, doesn't pinch** — Trousers should stay up without a belt and still feel comfortable when you sit or move.
7. **Match trouser length and leg width** — If more than about 4–5 cm comes off the length, the leg width often needs a slight adjustment so the proportions still work.
8. **Test movement: sit, walk, circle your arms** — Move around a bit — sit down, climb stairs, circle your arms — and check that nothing pulls, the button doesn't strain and the fabric doesn't bunch.

## Bring the real outfit

Bring the shirt and the shoes you will actually wear with the suit, so the fitting reflects the real proportions instead of a guess.

## Common questions about suit fitting

### Which suit alterations are hardest?

Shoulder and collar work are the most demanding, so it's best if those areas already fit reasonably well off the rack.

### How much shirt cuff should show?

About a centimetre of shirt cuff at the sleeve is the usual guide when the jacket sleeve length is right.

### Can trousers be taken in at the waist?

Yes, the waist is one of the more straightforward adjustments; the goal is trousers that stay up without a belt but do not pinch when you sit.

### What is the tug test on a jacket?

Do the jacket up and give the front button a gentle tug — about 2–3 cm of give is ideal; much more and it looks too loose, less and it pulls wrinkles.

### Does the leg width need adjusting when trousers are shortened a lot?

Often yes — if more than about 4–5 cm comes off, the leg width usually needs a slight adjustment so the proportions stay balanced.

### Should I bring my shirt and shoes to the fitting?

Yes — bring the shirt and shoes you'll actually wear with the suit, so the fitting reflects the real proportions.
