Fitting a wedding dress: what actually matters

Fit, not just timing

The appointment itself is where fit is made or lost — whether the hem ends up right, whether straps stop slipping, whether the dress sits the way you pictured. It comes down to what you bring and how clearly you say what's bothering you. Time is not the constraint: after the fitting, most dresses are ready in one to two working days. What makes the fitting count

Most problems at fittings trace back to the same two causes: wrong shoes and missing shapewear, or unclear communication. Both are easy to fix — and then a single appointment is usually all it takes.

   Book the fitting as soon as the dress is here

   You don't need months of lead time. Book the fitting once dress and shoes have arrived — the alteration is usually done in one to two working days, even a few weeks before the wedding.

   Always bring your wedding shoes

   The final length depends on your heel height; bring the exact shoes you will wear on the day (or a pair of identical height).

   Plan underwear and shapewear from the start

   Wear the underwear or shapewear you will actually wear under the dress, so nothing cuts in, shows through or changes the fit.

   Hem: brush the floor, don't mop it

   Aim for a hem that just brushes the floor or floats about a centimetre above, so you can walk without stepping on the dress.

   One fitting is usually enough

   With the right shoes and underwear we pin waist, bust, straps, length and train in a single appointment. A second fitting only makes sense for elaborate layers or a corset.

   Communicate details clearly

   Discuss what matters to you: how much décolleté to show, how close the sleeves should sit, which lace to emphasise.

   Test the pinned length

   Walk a few minutes in the atelier with the hem pinned to check you can move, turn and dance before it is sewn.

   Choose who comes (one or two people)

   Too many opinions add stress; most ateliers suggest bringing only one or two people you trust.

   Pick a workshop with bridal experience

   Gowns often have several layers, corsetry and lace. Ask how much experience the workshop has with them and whether it commits to a firm pickup date — we do both at the fitting.

A calm fitting is a good fitting

Give yourself time at each appointment and say what you feel. A dress that fits your body and your nerves is the one you forget you are wearing — which is exactly the point.
